David's Inspiration
"D-Fence was painted when the Bucs were going to the Super Bowl in 2002. The concept for the piece is that the Bucs had an old-school defense and the old American way of winning championships was through defense. Warren Sapp and Derrick Brooks - those two were the cornerstones of that defense. I put them in the poses from American Gothic because it is such a classic pop culture image that says "old-style America,'' and then they are holding the D and the Fence."
