Luuuucy! - Tribute to Lucille Ball

David's Inspiration

"Lucy" was the next large oil painting I worked on after finishing "The Godfather." I still didn't have a permanent gallery yet but I had just opened one up in Ybor City and my idea was to let the public come and watch me paint Lucy. I had always wanted to paint an image from the Lucy show and obviously it was going to be animated and Lucy had to be the center of attention. I kept getting bigger and bigger with her eyes. You cannot look at that painting without going back to the eyes at some point. It's that moment in every show where she's been caught. She's the only one who is looking out at the audience and she's the only one who messed up. All the other character's eyes and all the vertical and horizontal lines draw the viewer back to her eyes. Everybody else's body language is disappointment; hers is "I'm sorry! I didn't mean to!"
